While I’m biased I think our Batman family costumes were epic. It really helped that the DC characters are distinct with a lot of personality and the sky was showing off. Last year we were all the same thing- pirates and that was great but it was nice to have individual personalities this time. We thought our youngest was the perfect age to be Robin. That was kind of the start of how we came up with the Batman theme. Also the Coronavirus was this year and it seemed appropriate to have masks since it was the Year of the Mask.
It worked out that my other son wanted to be Batman so the boys were a cute Batman/Robin duo and Matt completely embraced being Joker. Should I be concerned he was a little too good? I also learned that each Joker has a different look. I had to go through the photos of the cartoon Joker, Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Jared Leto and compared them all. Matt picked the Heath Ledger joker to emulate. Which Joker would you want to be?
A Couple of Details for Batman Family Costumes
The girls discussed all the different options for them and were happy with their choices as well. My oldest loves to do face paint and have her hair dyed. Harley Quinn was perfect for her. We showed her multiple Harley Quinn costumes and she decided she wanted the original look. We supplemented the Poison Ivy look with some Ivy from Hobby Lobby. One thing that helps make the costumes come alive is to act and become like the character. It’s so fun to act. Play fighting my kids can do with or without costume so they nailed it.
How Did You Decide on the Location?
Once we decide on a theme I’m busy figuring out a location. My initial thought was it would be great to photograph these costumes in New York City but that wasn’t going to be possible. Then I thought an abandoned building would be fun (I didn’t know of any we could use and wasn’t sure if it would be safe). I knew of some places downtown that had some graffiti on the wall and I thought that would be fun. Ultimately I wanted a city landscape like Gotham City or Gotham’s City Hall. We went around downtown taking photos where we thought it looked like a city. We always bring smiles to people’s faces walking around in costume.
Photo Tip: Pick a Day with Clouds in the Sky
We had some flexibility in dates to photograph these so I chose a date where I knew we would get a moody sky that would complement the dark vibes of Batman. I also was able to photograph these at sunset which is always spectacular. There are even apps that tell you what days will be better sunsets than others. I don’t use these but I do pay attention if I’m going to have cloudy or clear skies.
Where the Costumes were Purchased
Joker Costume- Cossky . Matt bought the wig from amazon (a brown one) then used a spray to dye it green. He didn’t want a green wig he wanted it to be a dirty brown/green just like the movies. He also got purple gloves from amazon. He already had black shoes.
Batman Costume- amazon . The gloves and batarang are also from amazon.
Robin Costume- Amazon
Harley Quin and the Hammer- Amazon. We got her makeup from Walgreens, Amazon and Walmart
Posion Ivy- The costume and green mask are from amazon. Her boots from from DSW. I got extra vines as a prop from Hobby Lobby.
Catwoman- My favorite catwoman is the Michelle Pfeiffer one. We tried ordering that costume but it just didn’t fit right so I got this black jumpsuit (which could work for an avenger costume in the future) from Amazon . My black boots are Jessica Simpson.
Year of the Mask
When I posted these photos on social media I said it was the year of the mask. Which is true from a Covid standpoint. Everyone had to wear a mask this year. All of our costumes had some sort of mask involved with either facepaint or an actual mask. This was such a fun family outing to do these Batman Family Costumes together. Check out our pirate halloween costumes from last year.
